Credit Card Payment Failed? Common Reasons and How to Fix It

Having trouble completing your payment with a credit card? Don't worry. A declined payment does not necessarily mean there is a problem with your order or your card. In many cases, the payment may fail because of a security verification issue, a transaction limit, incorrect card details, or a temporary restriction from your card issuer.

This guide explains the most common credit card payment errors and what you can do to complete your purchase successfully.

Why Did My Credit Card Payment Fail?

There are several possible reasons why a credit card payment may not go through. The most common ones include:

  • Incorrect security code
  • Daily or transaction limits
  • Incorrect card number
  • Incorrect expiration date
  • Bank security restrictions
  • International or online payment restrictions
  • Temporary transaction errors

Below, we explain each situation and how to resolve it.

1. Incorrect Security Code or Card Verification

You may see a message such as:

“The security code you entered may be incorrect, or this credit card may not be accepted.”

Your card's security code is usually the CVV or CVC, which can normally be found on the back of your card.

How to fix it

Please check that:

  • Your CVV/CVC has been entered correctly.
  • Your card is still valid.
  • Your card supports online payments.
  • Your bank has not blocked the transaction.

If the information is correct but the payment still fails, please call the customer service number shown on the back of your credit card and ask your bank to approve the online transaction.

After the bank confirms that the transaction is allowed, please return to the checkout page and try the payment again.

2. You Have Reached Your Credit Card Limit

Sometimes a payment can fail because you have reached your card's daily spending limit or available credit limit.

This can happen when:

  • You have already made several purchases that day.
  • The transaction amount exceeds your daily limit.
  • Your bank has imposed a temporary spending restriction.
  • Your available credit is insufficient for the purchase.

How to fix it

You can contact your credit card company to confirm your available limit and whether the transaction can be approved.

If the payment cannot be completed, you can also try using another credit card.

3. Incorrect Card Number

If the system indicates that your card number may be incorrect, please carefully check the number you entered.

Make sure that:

  • All digits are correct.
  • No digits are missing.
  • No extra digits have been entered.
  • The card is still active and valid.

If you have confirmed that the card number is correct but the payment continues to fail, please contact your card issuer or try another card.

4. Incorrect Expiration Date

Your payment may also fail if the expiration date is entered incorrectly.

Most credit cards display the expiration date in the following format:

MM/YY

For example:

08/28 means the card expires in August 2028.

Please carefully check the expiration date printed on your card and make sure it matches the information entered during checkout.

5. Your Bank Declined the Transaction

Even when all your card information is correct, your bank may still decline the payment.

This can happen because of your bank's security or fraud-prevention system.

For example, your bank may temporarily block a transaction if:

  • It is an international online purchase.
  • The purchase amount is relatively high.
  • You are using a new device or location.
  • The transaction appears unusual to the bank.
  • Online or international transactions are disabled on your card.

What should you do?

The best solution is to contact your credit card company and ask why the transaction was declined.

You can ask:

“Why was my online payment declined?”

You can also ask the bank to confirm whether your card allows:

  • Online payments
  • International payments
  • E-commerce transactions

If the bank confirms that the transaction is permitted, please try the payment again.

6. Other Payment Errors

Sometimes the checkout page may display a general message such as:

“An error occurred while verifying your credit card information.”

If no specific reason is provided, we recommend checking all your card details again:

Card Number → Expiration Date → CVV/CVC → Billing Information

If everything is correct and the payment still fails, please contact your credit card company for more information.

Your bank may be able to see the exact reason why the transaction was declined.

What Happens to My Order If the Payment Fails?

If your payment is unsuccessful, your order or unpaid checkout information may remain available in your shopping cart or pending order.

This means you usually do not need to select all your products again.

Once you have identified and resolved the payment issue, return to your order and click:

“Pay Again”

You can then continue with the payment.

What If My Credit Card Still Doesn't Work?

If you have checked all your card details and contacted your bank but still cannot complete the payment, you can try the following solutions.

Option 1: Contact Your Bank

Ask your credit card company whether the transaction has been blocked and whether they can authorize it.

Option 2: Use Another Credit Card

If your current card continues to be declined, try another valid credit card.

Option 3: Use Another Available Payment Method

If another payment method is available at checkout, such as PayPal or another supported payment option, you can try using it instead.

Quick Credit Card Payment Troubleshooting Checklist

Before contacting support, we recommend checking the following:

☐ Is the card number correct?
☐ Is the expiration date correct?
☐ Is the CVV/CVC correct?
☐ Does the card have sufficient available credit?
☐ Have you reached your daily spending limit?
☐ Does your card allow online payments?
☐ Does your card allow international transactions?
☐ Has your bank blocked the transaction for security reasons?
☐ Have you tried another payment method?

Still Having Trouble?

If your payment continues to fail after checking the information above, please contact your credit card issuer first. They can usually provide the most accurate reason for the declined transaction and advise you on how to authorize the payment.

Once the issue has been resolved, you can return to your order and select “Pay Again” to complete your purchase.

Important Security Reminder

For your security, never share your full credit card number, CVV/CVC, PIN, or other sensitive payment information publicly or by email.

By following the steps above, most common credit card payment problems can be resolved quickly and you can continue with your purchase.
